hacking the switch

I was writing an email to a couple friends on how to hack the switch and decided to just put it here instead!

There are a few routes to go, all with their pros and cons.

The route I took and explain below installs SX operation system into the switch os, so all current stuff loaded is NOT lost (however there is a caveat, see below).
With SX its possible to install (.nsp files) games onto your microsd card OR load them as if you had the cartridge (.xci files)

This method requires a few things, a payload injector (dongle) and a jig, and a microsd card (256 or higher)
  • if you go to this site go to resellers they list a few places to purchase or i copied the one i used below
  • I purchased (this is the payload injector and jig)
  • Xecuter SX Pro from https://www.nx-card.com/home/1-xecuter-sx-pro.html
    • FYI it did take a while to ship from china; maybe some of the other resellers have usa warehouse idk

after you have the required items
  • format your microsd card as fat32 (you will probably need to download a tool look for Fat32Formatter.exe or guiformat.exe)  i had some further issues here and ended up needing to install AOMEI partition assistant (trial version).  but the others list are much more lightweight and completely free so they are preferred
  • find out your switch firmware version (go on your switch and go to settings>version) and download the sx payload for your version
    • 5.1.0 - download SX OS latest (https://sx.xecuter.com/download/SXOS_v2.9.2.zip)
    • 9.1.0 - download the SX OS Beta (this is what i had todo) (https://sx.xecuter.com/download/SXOS_beta_v2.9.4.zip)
  • you will also need the sx loader
    • you will end up with your microsd card formatted as fat32 and 2 files payload.bin and boot.dat
  • look here for a good tutorial on what todo next

After finishing the steps above and the youtube tutorial, you have a hacked switch.  you can download games from where ever
https://nxbrew.com/   (ALOT OF ADS)
the games will either be nsp or xci.
normally they will exist on your computer first.  so you need to transfer them to the microsd card however fat32 doesnt allow files larger then 4gb so you will need to split them first. see here https://github.com/AnalogMan151/splitNSP (xcis also have a splitter https://github.com/choss/java-xci-splitter/releases)
So once you have them split (or if the file is just less then 4gb to start) you copy them onto your microsd then startup your switch, go to album, which will load sx, and then go to install
FYI
there is another app called goldleaf (https://github.com/XorTroll/Goldleaf/releases) that is suppose to make this process easier. ill be trying it next time i load a game but idk details at the moment.
also i skimmed a little here, if you get to this point let me know and i can help!!!!

CAVEAT
with this method you can no longer turn your switch on without having the dongle plugged in.  HOWEVER putting it to sleep and waking it are fine (no need for the dongle); so most of the time its not an issue most ppl dont turn off their switch they just put it to sleep.

Other Methods to hack the switch (I haven't tried these so i really dont know) !!!!
From what i can tell they dont require the jig and dongle!  and they dont suffer the same caveat explained above.  see here for all the information https://switch.homebrew.guide/
the one to install Kosmos sounds really cool, but it is a whole new os, so it would wipe existing data (though they might have a backup feature, idk)
