Bend
I wanted to sell it more when people ask and I never do it justice. So I figured, given a little time, I could come up with some good reasons to visit.
Bend is a pretty small town, its surrounded by even smaller towns so its probably more like a medium sized town.
Mt Bachelor
Snowboarding has for a while now been a big part of my life and captured me immediately. There is nothing like skiing/snowboarding, imo. But for the faint of heart there is also tubing and dog sledding!
For first timers I wouldn’t suggest buying lift tickets as there are free lifts and magic carpets. Though they do offer lessons which could be beneficial; especially for kids.
In the summer months they offer sunset dinners at the top lodge!
The winter season starts the day after Thanksgiving (provided there is enough snow, sometimes its more like early December) and goes until the end of May!
Lakes
Surrounding Mt Bachelor are a bunch of lakes filled by the snow melt. Very clear water, good fishing
- Elk Lake - big lake, summer concerts every weekend, the resort has cabins, otherwise tent & rv camping. They also have a mobile dock we could rent.
- Devils Lake - very shallow lake (mostly 3'), tent camping and fly fishing only
- Twin Lakes - big lake, offers cabins.
Deschutes River
Ive mentioned many times the concerts on the river. We rarely buy tickets, rather we prefer to grab the kayaks and float the river; then anchor next to the amphitheater. In general the river is pretty mellow and shallow. All up and down the river is great fly fishing! More Info
What we have to share
- Our house is a little small, we can fit everyone but it will be a bit packed
- 2 Kayaks (probably could get 2 more), and another small boat with trolling motor.
- trailer camper. Sleeps 3, which means mostly just room for us but I'm sure we could squeeze the kiddos in there.
- Extra snowboard and boots (mens 11)
- Lots of love
Sisters & Sunriver
Sunriver is a fairly big resort with a water park, observatory (with large telescopes you can look through), golf, kayaking, and a small outdoor animal conservation thing.
Sisters is a nice small town. During some months they have shows; like the rodeo and quilting🙄. They also have Hoodoo not to far from them, which is a small locally owned mountain with a lot of family activities (especially during their events).
Wildfires
When the wildfires are burning; air quality can get really bad to the point of being unable to go outside (for the most part). Even worse is that it could be burning miles away and depending on winds smoky here, or not. Its impossible to give a forecast or expectation here, just need to check in advance. Just a couple years (since I have been here) its been bad, most of the time its nice.
